Sunday Rides

Most Sunday mornings a group of us set off from the rear of the Civic Centre at 10am. We like o cycle for an hour or so before calling at a tea-shop or pub.   We tend to head into the prevailing wind so that the return journey is easier!

A smaller group meet at 9am at Four Lane Ends for a slightly longer and faster ride. Check with Peter Young on 07796 302990 if you would like to join this group.

You can see some of the routes mapped in detail at

Here are some of our favourite destinations:

North

We like the Swinburne Arms in Stamfordham. You can get a nice toasted sandwich with a pot of tea or pint of real ale. There is plenty of space to store the bikes securely and a sunny garden to sit out. The legendary Jack Charlton is one of the regulars in the bar.

South

The ride to the cafe at Whitburn is an interesting combination of urban and rural off road tracks and old railway lines

East

We head for the coast along the north bank of the Tyne, and, after stopping for coffee in North Shields, have lunch at the Egon Ronay cafe in Seaton Sluice

West

Both banks of the Tyne have good traffic-free routes out to Wylam and beyond. The Boathouse Inn is next to the station and serves a wide range of real ales and tasty pub grub.
